Over the past decade, Mate has collaborated with some of the most exciting emerging and established artists in the US, as well as in Europe. Based out of Long Island (NY), and the greater NYC metro area, he is probably most known as a jazz and classical composer and performer, however, his original music spans across a very broad spectrum of musical styles and genres. His works, written for a highly diverse array of ensembles, have been repeatedly performed by professional orchestras, big bands and other groups. In addition to writing, performing and recording his own music, Mate is also an avid film music composer, having worked with Webby awarded directors, while his film scores have been featured at numerous film festivals across the US, such as the SOHO International Film Festival in NYC, the Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX, the Los Angeles Fear + Fantasy, and the New Hampshire Film Festival, to name just a few.

MATE MARCINA Award Nominated Composer & Arranger, Pianist, and Educator

Mate holds a Master's Degree in Jazz Composition from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in NYC, where he studied under the mentorship of the award winning composer and pianist, Richard Sussman. In addition to his Master's Degree, Mate also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Composition, as well as in Music Education, both from the Academy of Music, University of Ljubljana, where he graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors). Lastly, he also holds an Associate's Degree in Jazz Piano Performance, from the Conservatory of Music in Ljubljana.

During his time at the Academy of Music, he was nominated for the university's highest artistic achievement award, after the premiere of his own Piano Concerto, a large scale classical/jazz crossover project, which he himself performed alongside the Symphonic Orchestra of the RTV of Slovenia. Other most notable collaborations are with Jure Ivanusic and the Studio Orchestra of the RTV of Slovenia, for a commercial album release Sonce in Sence, for which Mate contributed a number of arrangements; a film score project for the award winning writer/director Alice Shindelar's short, I Want You Inside Me; Confluence, a brand new orchestral piece commissioned by the Society of Slovene Composers, performed by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra; studio recordings of Mate's original big band compositions, by the Big Band of the RTV Slovenia; live performances alongside amazing international artists such as Jake Hertzog, Tony Speranza, Jonathan Dely, Benjamin Sutin, Yigit Karatas, Nejc Avbelj, Elijah Schiffer, Jan Kus, Owen Broder, Shai Golan, Daryl Johns, Adrian T. Moring, Noel Mason, Matej Hotko, Steve DeBellis, Robin Baytas, Vid Usenicnik, Crt Psenicnik, and many others.

Mate was also a recipient of the highly exclusive, merit based scholarship, provided by the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Slovenia, to pursue his Master's Degree in the US.

Mate is currently affiliated with Grace Music School, a premier private music school, providing the highest quality in music education to the Long Island community, open at two convenient locations - in Fort Salonga and in Melville.

At Grace Music School, Mate offers private piano lessons and heads the music theory program. The latter is his own effort and was initiated in order to provide the students with the knowledge required to become better musicians with a deep and well-rounded understanding of musical concepts and music as a whole.

Mate's students have scored above 95% at the yearly NYSSMA juries exclusively and are active performers, having played at a number of various recitals and different events across the region. Among the more notable are public performances of some of his students at the world famous Carnegie Hall in NYC, in June of 2017. This exclusive event, organized by the Grace Music School, required the students to pass a rigorous audition process which featured a panel of independent jurors.

In March 2017, Mate's student Sarah Zdanowski placed as one of 8 finalists in the Billy Joel Piano Competition, featuring Joel's classical piano pieces from his album "Fantasies and Delusions". The competition was open to all US students under the age of 18 and saw submissions by young aspiring pianists from as far as California.

Mate's goal is to instill the love and appreciation for music in every one of his students, to promote qualities like hard work, patience and diligence, and above all else to provide uncompromising music education of the highest standards.

Mate is a certified Steinway & Sons® Educational Partner, a member of the New York chapter of the Society of Lyricists and Composers, the Long Island Composers' Alliance, and the Society of Slovene Composers.
